Cheap Dover Car Parking » Calais CalaisCalais is a town in Northern France, the closest French town to England making it the ideal port for ferry crossing. As well as its port it is also famous for its lace making, chemicals and paper manufacture. The French end of the Channel Tunnel is also situated just outside of the town of Calais. Calais was originally founded as a fishing village prior to the 10th century. It was later heavily fortified due to its vulnerable position being so close to the United Kingdom. The town was captured by King Edward III of England in 1347 and the French driven out. The English settled in the area and for many years it was regarded as being an integral part of Kingdom of England and served as a gateway to the rest of France. The majority of Calais was destroyed during the Second World War and nowadays it is seen by most visitors simply as a small town to pass through on their way elsewhere. Due to the large differences in taxation between France and Britain on items such as alcohol and tobacco there have been a large number of shopping complexes built near by. These attract day trippers from England who cross the channel to buy items cheaper than they can in the UK. |
