Cheap Dover Car Parking » Dunkerque DunkerqueDunkerque (or Dunkirk) is a harbour city in the north of France, 10km from the Belgian border. Until the middle of the 20th century the city was a Dutch speaking area, today that has mainly been replaced by French. In World War II there was heavy fighting around Dunkerque during the German invasion. The city had been converted into a fortress and in 1944 Allied forces attempted to liberate the city but it wasn't until May 1945 that the fortress finally surrendered. Today Dunkerque is the third largest harbour in France and is also an industrial city, heavily dependent on the steel, food processing, oil refining, ship building and chemical industries. |
